At the Oscars, Will Smith hit Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke about his wife actress Jada Pinkett Smith. But by reacting so violently to his insult, he was depriving him of the opportunity to deal with it himself.

Remember the 89 Academy Awards in 2017 when we thought that envelopes placed in the wrong place were the biggest controversy ever at the Oscars. Well, the 2022 event has made 2017 look like a bit of a distraction. It is not every day that the nominee for an Oscar (and finally an Oscar winner) hits a famous comedian in the face on live TV. But Will Smith made it happen Sunday night and Chris Rock was the last to accept. After the comedian made a joke about Will's wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith, shaved her head, the actress walked onto the stage and slapped him hard in the face. The bizarre scene of the incident, however, has since split as fans have split in support of Will and Chris.

First of all, it's a joke. There is no redeeming Chris joke there. It was a bad and cruel joke too. Roasts and jibes are common in comedy but any comedy that deserves their salt know that humor is about hitting the top and not hitting the bottom. And making fun of a person's illness, which they call abuse, is the very definition of the latter. Jada Pinkett Smith spoke of hair loss due to alopecia, an autoimmune disorder. In 2018, he called it ‘scary’ to deal with it. Jokes about someone's abuse on live TV do not 'cool off' in any situation.


The joke was crass, we got that. But did it justify physical assault? Of course not. Nothing to do. If you don't like jokes, criticize, ignore, or talk about jokes. Use your words, not your hands. When Will Smith hit Chris Rock over a joke he didn't like, he dropped himself on all the superheroes around the world who made jokes because of jokes that were said to annoy them. Even the joke he made before that - to Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem - came out again.

  Bengal violence: Eight people burned alive as their homes were set on fire by a mob near the town of Rampurhat in Birbhum district on Tuesday. The killings were allegedly in retaliation for the killing of the Trinamool leader yesterday. West Bengal records zero Covid deaths for 8 straight days.

The positivity rate went up to 0.69 per cent from 0.61 per cent the previous day. West Bengal on Wednesday recorded zero COVID deaths for the first time in recent years but filed 153 new cases, a state health department report said. The number of new cases has risen by seven since Tuesday, the report said. 32 new cases have been reported in Kolkata and 28 in the North 24 Parganas region, it said. The positivity level rose to 0.69 percent from 0.61 percent the previous day. The number of daily tests was less than 23,912 on Tuesday to 22,226 on Wednesday, he said. With 166 people evacuated on Wednesday, the recovery rate stands at 98.86 percent, it said. The number of active cases on Wednesday was 1,795, down 13 times from the previous day, the report said.
