US calls India's stand on Russian sanctions 'very disappointing'

The US and Australia have criticized India for considering Russia's proposal to undermine sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies, which show deep tensions between emerging security partners as Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov travels to Delhi for talks.

"Now is the time to stand to the right of history, and to stand with the United States and many other countries, standing for freedom, democracy and sovereignty and the people of Ukraine, not for funding and promoting and supporting President Putin's war," Trade Secretary Gina Raimondo told reporters in Washington on Wednesday. of the program as "very disappointing," and added that he had not yet seen the details.

Australia's trade minister Dan Tehan, who also spoke at the forum, said it was important for democracies to work together "to maintain the rule of law that we have had since the second world war."

The comments show growing dissatisfaction with India among its counterparts in Quad, a group of democracies seeking to fight China's independence in the Asia-Pacific region that includes the U.S., Australia and Japan. India is the world's largest consumer of Russian weapons, and has also sought to buy cheaper oil as oil prices rise.

While India backed calls for a ceasefire and a solution to the situation, it did not vote in the United Nations for votes in a draft resolution criticizing Russia's invasion of Moscow. Bloomberg reported Wednesday that India is evaluating the rupee-ruble-denominated payment system using the SWIFT alternative after the US and European Union cut off seven Russian banks using a Belgian border-based payment system.

The Russian plan includes rupee-ruble-denominated payments using the national messaging system SPFS and Moscow central bank officials may visit next week to discuss details. No final decision has been made.

India's inland position on the war has sparked a heated debate over the past few weeks, with China's foreign minister visiting for the first time since 2019 and now Lavrov wants to strengthen support. At the same time, the US and its allies are stepping up their efforts to influence Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.
